LENS Initiatives

The LENS Selection Panel reviews funding requests from the Isle of Palms Police and Fire Departments to support initiatives that enhance public safety services and benefit the island's residents and tourists. Our efforts focus on giving back to the community by partnering exclusively with these departments to support island families and those in need. We also provide support and appreciation for our officers, firefighters, and their families through morale-boosting initiatives. Funding applications should fall into one of four categories: Hardship Awards, Event Sponsorship, Annual Recognition, or Community Support.

Hardship Awards

The LENS Hardship Awards provide crucial financial assistance to first responders and community members facing unexpected challenges, such as medical expenses, temporary housing, and other emergencies. These funds have supported families during medical crises, provided child support, offered safe shelter in domestic abuse cases, and helped those grieving a loss. To apply for assistance, please fill out the form available through our program. Your support allows us to make a meaningful difference in our community.

Education Scholarships

The LENS Education Scholarship Awards Program offers scholarships to members of the Isle of Palms Fire and Police Departments, as well as their school-aged children and spouses, to help cover the costs of primary and secondary education. These scholarships aim to promote the value of education and ease the financial burdens on our first responders and their families. To apply for scholarship funding, please fill out the two available forms. Your donations make a significant difference in helping our community members build a brighter future.

Public Safety Awards

This award recognizes public safety personnel from the Isle of Palms Police and Fire Departments who demonstrate exceptional community involvement through collaboration and partnerships. Nominees should have significantly improved public safety, fostered community trust, or reduced crime by implementing new initiatives or engaging in effective problem-solving. The LENS Foundation invites nominations for this award, with winners recognized annually. To nominate someone, please fill out our form.

IOPPD Internships

IOP LENS is sponsoring internships for college students seeking summer employment and experience in a law enforcement setting. Interns will be paid $15.00 per hour, with the IOP Police Department conducting interviews, setting work schedules, and defining job responsibilities. All applicants must undergo a criminal background check and a motor vehicle record check, with information gathered from law enforcement agencies and the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles to assess eligibility for employment.

Annual Recognition

Annual recognition by LENS occurs at the Annual Banquet the second week of May in conjunction with National Police week.  Four categories of LENS appreciation awards are made for exceptional achievement; (1) Founders Recognition Award, (2) Volunteer of the Year, (3) George Reeth Leadership Award, (4) Lifetime Achievement Award.
