Annual Recognition
Annual recognition by LENS occurs at the Annual Banquet the second week of May in conjunction with National Police week. Four categories of LENS appreciation awards are made for exceptional achievement; (1) Founders Recognition Award, (2) Volunteer of the Year, (3) George Reeth Leadership Award, (4) Lifetime Achievement Award.
Founders Recognition Award
Mike and Claire Powers

As early supporters of LENS since its inception in 2022, Mike and Claire have played a pivotal role in fostering community spirit and safety. Their contributions to the annual LENS Banquets have significantly supported local fire and police departments. Mike also serves as a member of the LENS Endowment Oversight Committee and as director of development.
Volunteer of the Year
Deb Barr

This year, LENS will proudly recognize Deb Barr, a longtime leader with the Exchange Club’s Child Abuse Prevention Committee (CAP). She has also chaired the IOP Connector Run for the Child, helping to raise more than $100,000 annually for the cause. Alongside her husband, Dave, Deb has been instrumental in supporting LENS and other charitable initiatives in the community.
George Reeth Leadership Award
Jim & Linda Thompson

Jim Thompson, recently honored with the Order of the Palmetto by Gov. Henry McMaster, is recognized for his numerous contributions to the community. Linda Thompson, a founding member of LENS, actively volunteers with the Island Turtle Team and the South Carolina Aquarium. Jim’s leadership in the LENS Endowment Oversight Committee and Leadership Speaker Series has been invaluable, while Linda’s dedication to community projects continues to inspire.

Mayor Phillip & Laurie Pounds

Thanks to our Fifty Founding Members, LENS thrives in supporting the IOPPD and our island community. Mayor Pounds was one of the first to recognize the potential of LENS and the value of a Founding supporters. Laurie served as Co Chair. of the 2023 LENS Annual Banquet and set a standard of Excellence for the Annual Banquet for years to come.

Dennis McLendon

LENS proudly acknowledges our Volunteer of the Year for exceptional dedication and support. Dennis, the Store Manager at IOP Harris Teeter, has been a vital supporter of LENS, actively contributing to numerous community functions beyond our program. We are honored to have such a community leader as Dennis on our Advisory Board.
George Reeth Leadership Award
Chaplain Paula Mullens

We are proud to announce Paula Mullen as this year's recipient. Paula is a chaplain with Lowcountry Community Chaplaincy and was on the scene to provide immediate support to the Isle of Palms police officers who were on the beach when the shooting on April 7th, 2023 occurred.
Lifetime Achievement Award
Kathryn Marley Magruder

Born in Siler City, NC on September 26, 1919, Kathryn moved to Isle of Palms in 2017 and quickly integrated herself into the community. She joined the Exchange Club, became a charter member of LENS, enjoyed duplicate bridge at the Senior Center, and maintained fitness with a trainer.
